Rivalries are the best part of sports. This is something you may hear one sports fan say to another, and as I would like to be recognized as a sports fan, I will agree: rivalries are fun. But do you want to know what's more fun than a good ol' Westbrook-KD rivalry for the ages? Friendship. Specifically, Best Friends Forever-level friendship that glows and grows on and off the court. I will quite easily convince you that I have identified the most special NBA friendship: DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry. You can thank me after you read.
I could write about how they look at each other, tease each other, do commercials together, parent together, and generally always seem to be standing next to each other in every group photo of any team (whether it’s the Raptors or Team USA) but ZboKnows is about showing the love, not describing it.
DeRozan loves Lowry:
Lowry really loves DeRozan:
This is a real friendship , this is a real bother, this is us forreal!!! Words can only explain so much to what this dude means to me so it's not going even matter what i say because words can't explain how important our friendship is to me. These examples are solid, but to truly understand and feel the love, you must spend hours scrolling through their social media posts and watching interviews. Just like it is hard to chronicle the rivalry of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, you have to live it to really feel it. And yes, by “live it,” I do mean stalk them on social media.
Fortunately for us, I am not the first person to notice their special bond; these two have been asked about their BFF status before. A very lucky reporter from the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail actually got to interview these two on their friendship after DeRozan signed his 5-year 139 million dollar contract. Contracts are boring; relationships are fun! (ZboKnows Lesson #1) Now we don’t all have time to read through their lengthy interviews. That is my job after all. So here is the takeaway: They are in constant communication. They Facetime late at night when they are not on the road. They hang out in each other’s rooms when they are on the road. They talk about their families. They are best friends. Their kids are best friends (you can’t make this stuff up!). And they are family.
It is easy to see that their off-court relationship drives their on-court chemistry, and that chemistry is high this year. They are leading the Raptors to one of the best starts in franchise history (well, at least a few games ago) and both players are posting career highs in points per game and effective field goal percentage. They are hands down my favorite (Eastern Conference) backcourt duo. Here they are being awesome at basketball:
Although I watch these two closely for lessons on alley-oop form and eternal love, I am not a blind follower. I have to disagree with Lowry on one item: “People don’t understand that our friendship is bigger than basketball.” Nothing is bigger than basketball, Kyle. Clearly he has yet to sit down with a warm cup of a tea and read anything on ZboKnows.
